Maintenance Worker
Job Title: Maintenance Worker Reports to: Public Works Director

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
This position performs semi-skilled manual work in construction, maintenance and service activities. An employee in this classification performs manual tasks, which require a medium degree of manipulative skill. Work is usually performed under immediate supervision, although work assignments, which are repetitive in nature, once learned, can be carried on without difficulty under only general supervision. Assignments will require driving a city vehicle and will often include the use of standard hand tools, the occasional operation of light power-driven equipment, and the occasional operation of light trucks or other equipment on a relief or fill-in basis. Work is evaluated through observation, on-site inspections and compliance with instructions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited, to the following:
- Irrigates gardens and lawns;
- Cleans offices, recreation center, restrooms, and replenish restroom supplies;
- Paints building surfaces, bleachers, parking lots and picnic tables;
- Sets up or removes folding tables, chairs, barricades, traffic cones or similar objects;
- Digs up ground for flower beds, ditches, and holes for sign posts;
- Operates a variety of equipment including power lawn mowers, weed trimmers, tractor mower, pickup trucks etc. as needed.
- Performs minor maintenance tasks on power equipment such as cleaning, oiling, greasing and adjustments;
- Conducts pre-occupation inspections of equipment, identifies equipment problems and reports problems for repairs;
- Trims and prunes tree branches;
- Repairs benches, playground equipment and sprinklers;
- Performs minor irrigation system repair, maintenance and troubleshooting;
- Observes all safety regulations and communicates potential safety hazards;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
- Cleans streets and repair potholes;
- Performs meter reading;
- Performs water and wastewater repairs;
- Building maintenance and cleaning;
- Assist in animal control activities;
- Performs other related duties as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED & EXERCISED
- General direction is received from the Public Works Director.
- This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Knowledge of:
- Knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools and equipment utilized in the area of assignment.
- Knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with the area of work assignment.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods as required by work assignments.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to:
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions in the English language.
- Communicate orally in the English language with customers;
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional requirements:
- This position requires the use of a personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid drivers’ license and have an acceptable driving record.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential or marginal functions.
Education & Experience:
- High School diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED); or six months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses, Certificates & Registrations:
- Valid Texas Driver License
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Heavy physical stress on back. Involves bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces and occasionally lifting objects weighing 25 to 50 pounds
WORKING CONDITIONS
The employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions and moving vehicle traffic. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
